Rain, rain go away

Published by ggmason at 8:32 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

It’s just not right to have a rainy Memorial Day weekend.  I haven’t had three days off in a row in three months and was so looking forward to some nice 40 mile bike rides.  Instead I’ve gotten in one soggy round trip to town (24 miles) and a few laps around the villagio.

I spent two hours doing yard work in the rain, not my idea of a good time.  This afternoon, trapped inside with no good excuse to do otherwise, I cleaned the refrigerator.  That’s something I’ve meant to do for some time but have managed to put it off so long that I had quite a store of penicillin produced.  Seemed a shame to flush it all down the disposal, antibiotics are expensive.  There were things in there that were absolutely  unidentifiable.  I know it’s totally and completely gross but as I’ve explained before, when you work all week and ski all weekend, there is precious little time to clean.  The fridge gets cleaned twice a year, just before and just after ski season.   Tomorrow, I’ll tackle the vegetable drawers.

I did do other things, I planted my upside down tomato garden, lugged dirt from the meadow to fill the top.  Here’s a great hint if you are planting one of these.  Cut a paper towel tube lengthwise and gently put the tomato plant inside.  Then all you have to do is roll the tube small enough to get the plant to slip through the hole in the planter.  Works like a charm!  I also started the winter/summer clothes swap.  Last night, I re-organized the pantry, also a chore that gets done before and after ski season.   I discovered that we have way too much oatmeal!

As you probably guessed, there was no skiing this weekend, at least not lift assisted.  I did see a fellow coming back from skiing the Pass while I was finishing up oiling the mayors stairs.  Another one of my many little part time gigs, cleaning the mayor’s house.  He’s loving coming home once a week to a clean house and I need the work.   The yard work was also a paying gig.   I  heard a rumor that we may be going back to work at Lift One next week or the week after.   I know for a fact that our hours are cut to only four hours per night..that’s kind of a drag.  On the bright side, if we close at 8pm, I can bike home without a headlamp.  Once the summer edition of the #1 Aspen/Snowmass guidebook comes out, I can start selling the winter edition.  I got a late start on summer, so I was only able to sell a couple of pages.  I’m hoping to sell the bejesus out of the winter edition so I can make some decent commissions to tide me through the winter.

Enough babbling.  Time for something to leave you giggling.  Oh…but before that, if you have not had the chance yet…do yourself a favor and go catch “Angels and Demons”.  To hell with what the critics say, I read the book and loved it and the film really brings the book to life.  Excellent casting, brilliant performances (for an action film), a very entertaining film.   Way to go Ron!

This was originally an article about the weather from the NY Times, Aug. 2003, (I  still remember that summer, it sucked! From Memorial day to Labor day we had one dry weekend…ONE!).

Wednesday in New York: Rain.  Heavy at times.  Followed by periods of precipitation.

Thursday:  Lingering showers throughout the day.  Chance of Rain 800 percent.

Friday: Moist. Damp sodden.

Saturday: Rainish. Showery. Precipitacious.

Sunday: Light rain followed by heavy rain followed by pouring.

Monday: Unseasonably rainy in the morning.  Uncharitably rainy in the afternoon. Unconscionably rainy in the evening.

Tuesday: Endless showers broken up by occasional flooding.

Wednesday: Remember “Waterworld”?  Like that, only with more rain.

Thursday: Not sunny.  The opposite of sunny.  Just forget about sunny. OK?

Friday: Clearing just long enough for you to make weekend plans.  Followed by obscene amounts of rain.

Saturday: Take a wild guess.

Sunday: Incessant, spirit-crushing rain.  The kind of rain that makes it futile to get out of bed in the morning.  The kind of rain that seems as if it will never end.  And guess what?  It never will.  Ever.  Do you understand?

Monday: Please go away.

Tuesday: Ample, brilliant sunshine throughout the day.

Wait - did I say sunshine?  I meant rain.  Really hard rain.

Geez…that made us laugh till we cried.  But I think we were crying cause we really believed that it would never, ever stop raining!
